Posted - 01/07/2008 : 17:35:11 The Genoa Bar Athlone was opened Christmas week of Dec 1967. The mural that you talk of which was made by one of the then owner’s family was of Neptune and Aphrodite. Do you remember the wine cellar at the end of the lounge ? Some great sessions in it from time to time . “Slán Tamal” quote: Originally posted by Sleeveen

The first all new and purpose built Bar/Lounge Deluxe as it was called then was the "Genoa Bar" at Custume Place. Opened circa December 1967.
Are you sure it didn't open a few months earlier than that, Mark? I seem to recall being in it around July of that year, and seeing the "mermaid" frieze being carried in by a meitheall. Does that piece of artwork still exist?
