On cold winters evenings we use to out and slide on the icy road close to goldens shop, on a little incline. Some slid down the hill standing up and others went down on their Hunkers if that is spelt right? Another word was Huckster ie he is a huckster or thats a huckster shop Moocher was another one
Another word was heres some money get yourself a wafer ie ice-cream there was 2p wafer 4p wafer and boy a 6p wafer was something
Another word i use to hear was buckshee which i believe is an army expression
And get the young fella a Mineral
Im sure there are lots more that people still use or remember such words

Yea, I love those old words now long out of use. Huckster Shop was one I'd never heard till I came to live in Mullingar in the '70s.
Moocher as far as I know, came from one of those old Comics, the Dandy, Beano, Popeye etc. Buckshee is a very old British Army slang word, from the Arabic word Backsheesh, meaning spare, left over, unwanted, surplus to requirements, etc. As I'm originally from Co. Limerick I found some of the old Westmeath words interesting, hilarious even. Words like Cashapooka' (mushrooms) Sham, (?) Russian Boots (Wellingtons) to name but a few. I remember those Wafer ice creams, two'penny, thru'penny and the huge sixpenny! As a small boy I once worked all day twisting hay-ropes in a local Farmers' meadow. Toward evening he told me he'd "leave a ha'penny ice-cream in the local Garage" for me! (Mean old git) The Garage, I found out too late, didn't sell ice-cream! Ahh, the innocence of it!

The context I heard Buckshee "Its a Buckshee job" meaning second rate poor workmanship, (Arseways, woejous) |

| The Curse of the blight on you and another one was Bad cess to you ? so feel free to correct spelling ,but as you can see even in our short time living sounds and spellings of words seem to change so quickly, over the years its easy for words and sayings to change like The message sent in the ww1 ,The message was "Send reinforcwments were going to advance " but again it reached headquarters afer passing through many operators it read "Send three and fourpence were going to a dance" |
