Today Weds 10 March 2010 according to an AERTEL report on RTE a bomb scare has happened in the middle of town and centres around a shop in the Golden Island area of Athlone. There are diversions for traffic in place as a result. I was phoned by my wife at about 10:45am today and she claims that according to her sources that two viable devices have been discovered near Dunnes Stores Irishtown. It will be interesting to see which of these reports prove the most accurate!

I'm hearing that there are two viable devices that have been found. Both outside head shops in and or around Irish town. I suppose its also possible it was two devices outside the one headshop.

Well there is one head shop almost directly across the road from Dunnes Store there is a pic of it on this site. (The photo has a nice woman's rear view in it.)

This one, although she has a coat on so you must be using your imagination as to what her rear looks like...

I would have been surprised had RTE not had the news quicker as their offices are only about 400 or 500 yards away from these areas. I wonder if the so-called security cameras in this region are rigged up and active or if they are only trained on the traffic?

Oh and I said it was a nice rear view not a nice rear!!

I wonder will the fact that it is not active be highlighted on the news? Does this also mean we are going to end up hearing about another Bonnavalley attack due to the inaction to get the system sorted? This is a complete disaster. What will it take - someone to be killed before anything is done?

The alert is over. Both devices were declared hoaxes. The streets have been re-opened.

The devices might have been declared hoaxes (thank God) but the message that they delivered is no hoax. This is a very sinister development.

You realize of course that by declaring the stuff that Headshops sell illegal, the drug dealers who are attacking the head shops will just step in and start selling the stuff the head shops are selling now? Mind since the competition from the headshops will end shortly it doesn't make much sense that they would continue attacking them?

Now RTE is reporting the devices were in fact 'viable'.

Was it RTE who first declared them hoaxes?
