This pub opened in the early 70s as a brand new pub which was an unusual event in Athlone at the time - the Dell near the railway station (now demolished) was the only other brand new pub that I recall opening in those days. The Shack was hugely popular with students, for ages it was the closest pub to the college (then called the Regional Technical College or RTC). Fridays and Saturday nights the place used to be hopping, I recall that it was probbaly the first pub in Athlone with floor staff, what are now called lounge boys & girls.
Can't remember the name of the original owner but I do remember that he had a reputation as being a ladies man. |

Hello !scratch let's see if I can jog your memory? The first all new and purpose built Bar/Lounge Deluxe as it was called then was the "Genoa Bar" at Custume Place . Opened circa December 1967. The Dell, Shack, Grove,Hughes of Northgate street all came after it. the Genoa Bar had full table service for the first few years of opening. The Dell was my local for years and I recall seeing a Dublin chap called Brendan Grace take the stage as "Bottler". It was his very first appearance in Athlone ,He was never heard of before in town .I see he has now sold out his visit to the Hudson Bay this month. “Slán Tamal”

I always thought Danny Claffey was the original owner. Did he own a ladies hairdressing business called Caesars?

Hello ! Centurion ,once again you are spot on, Richard/Danny Claffey from St Francis Terrace and his wife Mandy had the hairdressing Salon called "Cesars" where the Olive Grove Restaurant is now. They were the origenal owners and still are of the Shack along with son Mark. quote: Originally posted by centurion
